I am one that does understand the hours put in at home work, I also have a friend that has a home office, and she does it well, as far as only working the hours she would put in, if she went to the office.
I would love to be able to work from home, I'm not one known to get dressed if there is no reason or need for me todo so :)

  I know what you mean elel! I'd rather put in longer hours later than have to wake up so damn early! :-) Well, 8am isn't that early I guess, just is when you're not a morning person.

I started my own business with my mom last summer. We own a daycare and it runs out of my home. I've never worked so many hours in my life! And then add the kids sports, volunteer activities and after school events....UGH!
I haven't had a day off in almost a year, and I usually work 6 days a week, 12 hour days.
Definately something you need to think about before tackling.
btw, today I wore a tank top and Mr Bubble pajama bottoms to work! - no make up, no hairspray, no gas for my van!

I work at home. I generally work 9-5, but it's a little more relaxed. Like today I stopped working for the afternoon to go get a haircut and coffee with a friend, so I'll be working a little later tonight than normal.
Some days I end up working more than a regular 8 hours, others I get done early. The longer days aren't too bad, as I'm usually waiting around for my boyfriend to get home from his 9-5 anyway and I barely notice what time it is until he gets home.
I keep things pretty structured, getting up early and getting dressed nicely. It makes it easier for days when I want to go out and do something, plus I think I'd start to feel like a bum if I did that for too long. It's kind of lonely, but luckily I've got a friend who's on hiatus for the summer, plus a lot of coffee shops with wi-fi close by.
The best thing is not having to drive. My car is pretty much dead, but I've been able to put off getting a new one for months just because I don't have to make a daily commute.

    I love to drive, but I hate rush hour traffic. Some people are so idiotic & dangerous in their actions on the road! And the drag of stop & go traffic caused by some dumb thing is a great irritant! Time to pray! LOL : )
    As a Missionary Pastor, I'm trying to start a home business that seems an excellent caliber. The one problem is having a little extra to spend in start up. I was just offered a part time job in printing, of which I have considerable experience. That might work to help get started.
    Then I might be able to schedule my driving in ways that are more pleasant. -Rev. S

    if somehow you can get to work by transit at a reasonable cost
    it is well worth it....one gets to work in a better frame of mine. Helps if one can do computer work at the same time.

  I just recently started working from home. The company I was working for closed down the office and made the offer to work from home. I could not turn it down. I will say that it is very hard to stay motivated and I am finding myself getting up later and later and staying up in the evenings later. It is not as easy as most people think it would be. I am enjoying the savings on gas though. I need to try to get things structured better. I believe I can make it work but it is going to take some time to get on a good routine and break this sleeping late thing that has already started.

If having my business fifty yards away from my TV and my busines and home phone is the same phone counts as working at home, I have done very well for my self... only took me twenty yeras to get here!!!

I ran several businesses from my home over a fifteen year period . It's good and bad . Some work can be done at any hour , and I was able to sub out my work for the first two months of my child's life and be a hands on Dad . The worst part was having clients over or salespeople .

When watching TV in the evening, I see the commercial for working at home, I have noticed that over time the commercial is the same with the same pitch, just the website changes from week to week. Note also last week I saw the commercial with new actors saying the same thing in the same order, just different faces with a new website.

the hardest part of working from home is disassociating work from home duties- convincing your mate that you are working & "honey-dos" have to wait for the proper time.
then again office sex without the stigma of sexual harrassment is a helluva perk.

    I've been doing it as a fundraiser for three years. I have a popcorn machine and a hot dog roller, so we can sell food. Just get the word out early and often, and if the weather's good you should make a few bucks for your cause.

      it's small right now...cause it's free and I'm not rich.
      I just applied for a grant to purchase a LCD player and popcorn machine. (right now both of those are on loan)
      We play movies in the fenced in play yard of my daycare. Good thing about it is that the stuff that we loan is through a school liason, so we advertise through kids backpacks at the school. If we were ever to do a fundraiser thing with it, we would already have the word out.....besides, its a REALLY small town.
      You could do a once-a-year school fundraiser with yours, that way they would let you advertise through them and you could get even more exposure.

        All of our advertising for the school fundraisers say "Sponsored by 'My company'". So I get some love that way. How do you get a grant to buy equipment? Is that because of the daycare thing? I just bought a 12' X 20' screen, and I'd LOVE a grant ;-)!

        Our community offers grants for those who want to provide events for the community that fall within their committees mission of "learn, dream, create".
        It would have to be a not-for-profit venture in order to qualify for a grant.
        Actually the daycare thing is hurting my ability to get donations. I requested donations of popcorn, movies, etc and was turned down until I can get my school liason partner to do a request on her letterhead.

We have a family business and when the kids were little, our office was in the corner of the kitchen. What made it work was help--a live-in grandpa, and part time office help. With someone there, it made it easier to stay on task, and I could duck out and go to the market without the kids--a real blessing! This was before computers, so we had inventory card files, and one day I got back from the market to find my 3-year old son on the office girl's lap, with his little fat finger holding a place in the file drawer. He wanted to help, and she found a way for him to be legitimately useful. When the kids were in school, we moved us all down to our store, and that was there second home after school. They worked for us growing up, and hit the job market running as they were ready to move up and out. They're all self-employed, three of the four run their work out of their homes.

Great post folks!
I've been working from home ever since I got out of high school.
You can do offline marketing and start your own offline business or you can harness the power of the internet.
I've decided to do both.
It's much harder (some say) to stay disciplined cause you don't have a boss - YOU are the boss. I would suggest getting an accountability partner so you can stay accountable to getting stuff done.
Go buy a white board and write all your goals down and follow this process.
Goal - Strategy - Action.
Write our the goal, put together a thorough game plan and go take action.
